These can be anything from a religious celebration to a musical event. Below are details of a few popular festivals that we know of that take place on the islands.
Festivals in São Vicente
São Vicente hosts two of the most lavish festivals: a beach music and culture festival during the full moon in August which attracts musicians and visitors from all over the archipelago and secondly, the exotic carnival with Brazilian influences in mid February:
São Vicente Creole Carnival - 16th February - The most popular feast of São Vicente is the Creole Carnival which is inspired by the carnivals of Brazil and mixed with their shared history of Portuguese flavours. The street parades are very much appreciated by the Cape Verdeans and tourists alike. The largest of the celebrations can be found in the town of Mindelo and can begin as early as 9am!
São Vicente Baia das Gatas Festival - August Full Moon - The Baia das Gatas Music Festival occurs each year over the August full moon. Usually a long weekend. Full of artists and bands, this festival is a real party.
Boa Vista Festivals
There are a few festivals on the island including the common music festival that takes place on Santa Cruz in August. The other main colourful festival is:
Santa Isabel (Municipality Day) 4 July - The day of Santa Isabel, the patron saint of the island. Celebrated with processions, swimming, horse racing, tours and a public ball.
Sal Festivals
The following are just a couple of festivals that take place on Sal:
Nossa Sra. De Piedade (Our Lady of Pity) 15th August - Mass, processions, swimming contests and music festival on beach with local musicians.
Santa Maria Festival (Municipality Day) 15th September - Music festival.
Festivals in Santiago
The following are just a couple of festivals that take place on Santiago:
Gamboa Festival - 17/18/19 May - Held in the bay of San Fransisco and arguably the biggest music festival in Cape Verde. Musicians from other countries come to Santiago to participate.
Tabanka - June/July - A celebration of the liberation of slaves which takes place in Assomada.
