Cape Verde has much more to offer than just great sunbathing weather and it would be a pity to travel to such a diverse destination and not learn a little about one or two of the islands. Island tours are available on Sal, Santiago, São Vicente & Fogo taking in the best places of interest on each island. Time to explore...

Sal Excursions

The following excursions are available in and from Sal and can be booked with your representative in resort. Places are sometimes limited so please advise us if you have already chosen an excursion and we will enquire before you travel. Prices are indications only. The exact price will be advised at time of booking whilst in resort. Please note that some excursions require a minimum number of people to take place.

 

Full Day Boat Trip

Sail along the coast of Sal on the White TIme sailing boat, with the opportunity for a swim. This whole day on board a sailing boat trip along this island’s coastline is a fantastic experience. Leaving from the port in Palmeira,  sail along the coast until you reach the beautiful bay of Murdeira. Why not try a swim or even fishing or snorkelling with lunch, snacks and drinks included - the perfect way to spend a day of your holiday!

Off-Road Safari

Pick up at 1pm from your hotel in an open 4x4 pick-ups on the regular road to Pedra de Lume. From here you go off road across Serra Negra, Murdeira, Algodeiro, Old Salina in Santa Maria, finishing up at the restaurant of Josh Angulo for a soft drink or local beer.

Quad Tours

If you have ever thought of driving across white sand beaches, this is the way to do it! Drive along all the natural beauties hidden on this island by fun-quad, on a 2 or 4 hour trip including the protected landscape region of the salt mines of the Pedra de Lume. Drive along the dunes on the coast passing through Kite Beach. The next stop is the Oasis of Algodoeiro and the fantastic beach of Ponta Preta – and that’s just half of what you will see. In addition, 4 hour tours visit Salina in Pedra Lume, where you drive on the volcano crater with beautiful views of the salt mine, and then onto Burracona which is known for its magical blue eye.

Fun Quad / Buggie

The Fun quad is an organised off road trip with small beach buggies, which follows the same itinerary as above. The excursion takes more or less 3 hours - stopping for photographs or a swim at the nice bay of Calheta Funda.

Catamaran Trips

A 4 hour trip starting from the fishing port at Palmeira, including soft drinks & local beer plus snacks. The catamaran sails to the Murdeira Bay and back giving you a chance to swim, snorkel or even fish.

Alternatively you could try the 3 hour whale and dolphin watching trip departing in the morning or afternoon from the fishing pier in Santa Maria. Transfers from your hotel and soft drinks or local beer included.

A Taste of Santa Maria

A 90-minute walking tour through the village of Santa Maria, visiting places such as the famous Santa Maria pier, church, an African market and a handicraft centre. You will also visit the local school during break period. The excursion includes a stop at Santa Maria's most beautiful bar with a soft drink or local beer included.

Neptunus - Glass bottom boat

A one and a half hour excursion on a glass bottomed boat to 2 different ship wreck sites, the unusual statue of Christ of the seas and many other interesting sights. Leaving from Santa Maria Pier daily at 11.30am.

Full Day Island Tour

A full or half day excursion around Sal with an opportunity for a 'float' in the local salt mine waters. Leaving Santa Maria you travel to the bay of Murdeira for a quick stop while the guide explains some of the rich history of Sal before you then travel to Terra Boa where you see the extraordinary mirages on the desert. The next stop is Burracona to see the natural phenomena, the ‘Blue Eye’. After having a chance to swim in the lagoon you will then head to the Salinas salt mines of Pedra da Lume. Here you can take a dip in the salt waters where you can float in the water just as in the Dead Sea, well worth experiencing. From here you will then travel to Espargos, the capital of Sal where those on the full day trip will be stopping for either lunch (included in full day trip) or a drink before heading back to Santa Maria.

Inter-Island Day Trips from Sal

These full day excursions include a transfer from the hotel to Sal airport, return charter flight, island tour with lunch and transfers. A minimum number of bookings is required for these excursions to take place.

Boa Vista

A photographer's dream, an island of coconut and date palms with mile after mile of beautiful beaches. You visit: Praia da Chave to see the old ceramic factory, still intact but now covered by dunes with the machines still in situ, Deserto da Viana an area of dunes providing a bizarre landscape, Sal Rei the main town of the island and the deserted beach of Santa Monica, over 40kms in length and where you stop to enjoy the silky white sands. Lunch is included, leavings at 6.30am and returning at 6.30pm.

Santiago

The largest and most densely populated of the Cape Verde islands. On the way to Picos you visit Sao Jorge dos Orgaos; and begin to gather first impressions of the island; small market places, the fascinating landscape of hills and valleys before arriving at Cidade Velha, the first capital of the Islands, followed by a visit to Forte Real de São Filipe, the main slave trading point between Africa and the New World. Finish the day with a visit to the capital Praia.  Lunch is included, leaving at 6.30 am and returning at 6.30 pm.

Fogo - Volcano Isle

A visit to São Filipe with it's famous Sobrados (traditional colonial style homes), the reason many visitors consider Fogo as the most fascinating of all the Cape Verde Islands. A charming town showing beautiful architecture, a candidate for world Heritage classification. Then take the coast road that climbs the volcano and experience breathtaking scenery. The arrival at Chã das Caldeiras is unforgettable, with the black volcanic scenery contrasting dramatically with the vineyards that provide the grapes for the famous Fogo Wine, fruit orchards and other exotic plantations. The first stop is the panoramic point Fortim; from there it's through the Avenida Marginal to the municipal market, the Torre de Belém and the fish market. Then onto Monte Verde, and descend from there to Baía das Gatas, well known for the August festival. On the way back, passing the incredible fishing village of Salamansa before heading back to your hotel.

São Vicente – Full Day Tour

The first stop is the panoramic view point Fortim, going from there through the Avenida Marginal to the municipal market, the Torre de Belém, the fish market and Praça Estrela, before heading towards Calhau, passing the agricultural area, the extinct volcano and Praia Grande. After lunch visit the natural part of the Island: Monte Verde and the beautiful bay Baía das Gatas where once a year the famous music festival takes place; on the way back travel through the incredible fisherman village Salamansa and then back to your hotel.

Full Day Trip to Santo Antão Island

Pick up from your Hotel at 7.30am to Mindelo’s harbour. Take the 8am ferry across to Porto Novo; here a guide will be waiting to take you up to the crater of the Cova volcano at 1,100m high. Following this is an easy trek on one of the greenest valleys of the island, alternatively, you can choose to go up to Pico da Cruz by bus and enjoy the forest of pine trees and a panoramic view over Vale de Paúl before continuing  to Paúl for lunch. After lunch visit the Ribeira Grande, Ponta do Sol and Fontaínhas. Lastly, it's onto Porto Novo for the ferry back to São Vicente and transfer back to your hotel.

Full Day Island Tour

The day starts with a visit to São Domingos, known mainly for its traditional handicraft centre, then on to São Jorge dos Órgãos (400 metres), where you walk through the National Botanical Garden and look at some endemic species of the archipelago. From here you can also see the highest point of the island, Pico de Antónia at 1,394m. Continuing on towards Assomada (previously known as Santa Catarina), the second biggest city of Santiago, to find the Tabanka Museu and a lively street market held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The next stop is at the ex-political prison and the Museu Renascença of Tarrafal. There is time before lunch for a short walk through the small village of Tarrafal and the beach. After lunch at Tarrafal you will travel along the coast back to Praia with stops at Porto Formoso, Calheta de São Miguel and Pedra Badejo on the way. There is also time for a photo opportunity at the Valley of 1000 Palms in Santa Cruz. Returning around 5.30-6pm.

Half Day Island Tour

This excursion starts with a short journey to Cidade Velha (once known as Ribeira Grande) the first capital of Cape Verde. Walk through the village, visiting the fortress of São Filipe, the Pelourinho, the Sé Catedral, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário and the convent of São Francisco. Afterwards you will travel towards Plateau to look at the Praça Alexandre de Albuquerque, surrounded by old buildings, exemplifying the old colonial architecture style, the Palácio da Justiça, the church of Nossa Senhora from 1900, the Municipality, the Culture Palace Ildo Lobo, the market and the miradouro.

Hiking - Option 1

Ribeira da Barca to the Waterfall Ribeira de Aguada round trip. Walk in the dense area of mango and coconut trees to the spectacular waterfall cascading off the high rocks onto the lush area below. Here you can take a wonderful shower in the waterfall that usually flows all year, although it is at its peak in early November! Approx 3 ½ hours in total, departing at 9am.

Hiking - Option 2

Serra Malagueta to Ribeira Principal, giving gorgeous views of the terraced land and the small villas below. The oasis like area is abundant with Mango, banana and coconut trees share the area with sugar cane. The path leads all the way down where you can catch a lift back to the starting point. This walk is at its most scenic and greenest from late August - December. Approx 4 hours in total, departing at 9am.

Hiking - Option 3

One of the more popular walks due to the 'big tree' that exists at the end of this moderate walk, Poilao da Boa Entrada is the largest and most spectacular tree in Cape Verde, estimated at 800 years old and having a trunk larger than many of the houses in the area.

Fogo Excursions

Half Day Tour to Salinas and the Northern Area

This tour begins with a visit to Salinas de Sao Jorge and the natural lava harbour, to enjoy the freshness of the crystal clear waters off the black sandy beach. Next stop is Ribeira Filipe, one of the highest points in the area. Here appreciate the fascinating view and observe the small coffee plantations and numerous fruit and vegetable gardens, which give colour to the landscape. You will have the chance to admire one of the island's oldest trees, the 200 year old Calabaceira tree, the fruit of which is used to make a typical regional juice. The last stop is Sao Lourenco Church the island's oldest church with orginal construction dating back to the second half of the 16th Century. Today it is taken care of by Capuchinho priests that train the community youth's. Tours run in the morning and afternoon.

Full Day Tour – Chã das Caldeiras - The Volcano

This excursion visiting the Fogo Natural Park is considered by many visitors to the island to be one of the most impressive landscapes in the world. Visit Forno, an area where the 'drop by drop' irrigation method is used, a technique adopted by farmers on the island in order to minimize the effects of drought. Onto Achada Furna a community where new homes were built for the population of Chã das Caldeiras after the 1995 eruption. Trekking to Pico Pequeno, hike up to the crater formed during the 1995 eruption, you can still find extremely hot spots. Lunch is at Portela with a sampling of traditional Chã das Caldeira wine, better known as Manecon. Finishing with a visit to the museum and the wine co-operative. Tour starts at 9am returning at 5pm.

Full Day Tour – Round the island, Mosteiros

By going round the island you can get an idea of the violence of the eruptions through the lava landscape which leads all the way to the sea. The tour starts with a visit to Salinas de Sao Jorge, and Vila de Mosteiros the friendly second biggest community on the island. Mosteiros council, established in 1991, is located on the north side of the island and occupies a mountainous area with fertile land and several microclimates, where the islands oldest and most exuberant forest, Floresta de Monte Velho is a predominant feature. The terrain is also volcanic lava, resulting from successive eruptions. It is mainly an agricultural municipality with a vast area dedicated to the cultivation of the famous Fogo coffee. The town of Mosteiros also has a small attractive centre wedged between the mountain and the sea, contrasting with the lava stone houses on the sombre outskirts. Lunch at Mosteiros, then visit the coffee plantations and a final drive through Cova Figueira Espigao - a look out with a complete view of the volcano with its lava flow leading all the way down to the sea.

Trekking  

Pico Pequeno - Hiking to the crater formed by the 1995 eruption. Taking 2 hours to climb up and 45 minutes to come down.

The Volcano - Hiking to the highest peak in Cape Verde, at the altitude of 2,829 metres. It allows you to get a full view of Chã das Caldeiras and of the dimension of the successive eruptions. Taking 3 to 4 hours to climb up and 1 to 2 hours to come down.

Chã Das Caldeiras/Estancia Roque - Hiking between different lavas and plantations, many of which are endemic. The hike finishes at the Estancia Roque community, where during the 1951 eruption some people lost their homes. Admire the views of the southern area, as well as of the island of Santiago, weather permitting. Taking 3 to 4 hours.

Chã Das Caldeiras/Parque Natural de Monte Velha/Mosteiros - After leaving Chã das Caldeiras the hike takes you to the edge of the Monte Velha forest, to see eucalyptus, cypress and many other tree species. On the approach to Pai Antonio community the coffee and banana plantations come into view, bestowing the rich landscape on you. Taking 4 to 5 hours.

Chã Das Caldeiras/Parque Natural de Monte Velha/Ribeira Filipe - This hike includes the western part of the forest until you arrive in Ribeira Filipe, an area allowing an excellent view of the northern part. Taking between 5 and 7 hours.

Trek prices are based on a group size of up to 4 passengers for 1 guide. If the whole group is bigger than 4 there will have to be 2 guides, bigger than 8, 3 guides etc. This therefore will affect the final prices.

Santo Antão

Full Day: Sugar Cane, Trapiche, Jews and Cliffs

The first part of this tour takes you to the Ribeira Grande, and the Vale do Paúl visitng a 'trapiche'  sugar cane plantation. View the process and taste & buy the produce such as Grogue punch, molasses and pure sugar cane syrup. Continue to Ponta do Sol to visit the famous Jewish cemetery, the sun dial and the town hall. Lunch at Ponta do Sol (drinks not included). After lunch travel down to Fontainhas through the fascinating landscape and villages.

Full Day: Plantations, Leds and Myths

The first part of this tour takes you to Ribeira da Torre throught the fruit plantations and onto Boca de Ambas to see the type of led or mini canals which makes for a refreshing dip during the rainy season. Continue onto Lombo da Santa rock formation with a mythical story and breathtaking landcsapes for some excellent photos, and then onto Horto da Garca valley which is covered with sugar cane, mango and papaya trees. Includes lunch in the shade of the Banana trees.

Full Day South: Caves, Puzolana, Agricultural Project of Lajedos

The first part of this tour takes you to Porto Novo and to the cheese factory and also the cement factory with the possibility of a guided tour. Continue onto Ponte Sul, Lajedos and then to Cha de Morte, Selada Alto Mira, Ribeira da Cruz, Alto Mira with a picinic stop for lunch at the agricultural project of Leao Lopes in Lajedoa visiting a block factory producing local crops such as mango and papaya jam, grogue punch and handicrafts.
