Stella Maris

Maio

Island Hopping from Sal

Situated in a clifftop position overlooking the turquoise ocean, Stella Maris is a lovely little property perfect for exploring the powdery white sands of Maio.

What we love

  • The peace, tranquillity and absolute stunning views of the alluring ocean from the clifftop infinity pool.
  • The petite private beach accessed by steps carved into the hillside.

Good to know

  • Maio is charming with a simple way of life; the Stella Maris staff are friendly and accommodating but English is limited.
  • The island is unused to mass tourism.

The infinity pool offers a refreshing escape from the heat of the day, boasting spectacular views. A detached villa as well as one and two-bedroom apartments benefit from this elevated position, all individually furnished offering their own unique style. The complex is centrally located and complemented by the team of friendly, English-speaking staff.

The peaceful ambiance of this hotel is only interrupted by the sound of the waves hitting the shore, perfect for relaxing on the terrace. You may spot the occasional flying fish and if you’re fortunate, the chance to witness a humpback whale breaching as it gracefully glides along. You have a range of delightful beaches on the doorstep; choose from the small, secluded private beach just for Stella Maris guests or take a short stroll to the endless white sands of Vila do Maio in Porto Inglês, known as Bitxe Rotxa to the locals.

Exploring the town

Vila do Maio is a mix of Portuguese and British colonial style buildings that spread up a small steep hill to a huge Baroque church. To the north of Maio you will find a magnificent 5km lagoon surrounded by lush vegetation.

About the Local Area

This small island just east of Santiago is a beautiful addition to any island hopping holiday. Whilst the terrain is similar to that found on Boa Vista and Sal, many parts of the island have been reforested, giving it a lovely lush green vibe.

Vila de Maio is a mix of Portuguese and British colonial-style buildings, these colourful buildings spread up the hillside leading to a huge Baroque church. The island is home to lovely unspoilt beaches and is largely untouched by tourism, making it a great place to escape and unwind.

Summer visitors may see some turtles on Maio's beaches and there are also some interesting birds that call the island home.

THINGS TO DO

WALKING

Visitors to the island will be able to experience wonderfully long and uninterrupted walks throughout the scenic landscapes, beaches and forests.

WILDLIFE

In the summer months tourists may be able to see some turtles on the beaches and some rare seabirds in the north of the island.
