Here are five of our absolute favourite beaches which you can find on the Cape Verde islands...

When compared to many other holiday destinations, Cape Verde has only been on the tourist radar for a short number of years, making it still relatively undiscovered. With 10 islands on offer and some being rather remote, the diversity of the destination is able to satisfy a great deal of holidaymakers, especially those in search of a lazy beach escape. So for all the beach lovers out there, here are our top five beaches in Cape Verde, where you can sit back, relax and soak up the warm African sunshine, or partake in a water sport or two.

1. Santa Maria, Sal

Located on Sal, Cape Verde’s most developed island, Santa Maria Beach runs along the south. A long sweep of golden sand, it’s a popular place for both sun worshippers and water sport enthusiasts, where over the winter months it becomes a windsurfing, kite boarding, and sailing heaven. With colourful fishing boats dotted along the shore, a fishing pier, beach bars and beautifully blue shallow water lapping up the sand, Santa Maria Beach feels just like paradise. 2. Santa Monica beach, Boa Vista

Considered the most beautiful beach of Cape Verde, it’s easy to see why Santa Monica Beach makes our list of favourites. Located in the south west of the island of Boa Vista, it’s the ideal location to get away from it all as the beach stretches for a massive 9km. The white sands here are perfect for long, romantic walks at sunset and during the day relaxing in the sunshine, enjoying an occasional dip in the refreshing azure water. 3. Praia de Chaves, Boa Vista

With a desert-like feel with sand dunes as far as the eye can see, Praia de Chaves is worth a visit in order to experience a beach setting which is second to none. You’ll feel like the only person on the planet with 5.6km of sand around you, so if you’re looking to truly get away from it all, then this is the place to be. You’ll find just a couple of hotels dotted along this coastline on the west of the island, one being the VOI Praia De Chaves Resort, an all-inclusive hotel where you can wake up to the sound of the waves gently lapping up the shore. Sounds like paradise? We think so.

4. São Pedro Beach, São Vicente

A real treat for water sport enthusiasts, Sao Pedro Beach is arguably one of the world’s finest for speed windsurfing. Small clusters of volcanic rocks are sporadically positioned along the golden sand, and impressive, rustic mountains dominate the views from the coastline. Stay on the island of São Vicente.

5. Laginha Beach, Mindelo, São Vicente

A stretch of powder white sand lapped by shimmering turquoise waters, you won't be disappointed with your visit to Laginha Beach in Mindelo. If the sand and sea isn't enough to tempt you, on a clear day there's wonderful views across to Santo Antão's mysterious mountains, and a lovely beach bar, Kalimba, serving tasty snacks and drinks. Just a short walk from the beach is Oasis Porto Grande Hotel and Kira's Hotel, both wonderful accommodation options on the island.
